Sugee Cake
At the very heart of this story is a circumstance that presents itself in many places, even in the small and tightly-knit Eurasian community where family bonds and traditions are strong. Such family ties are potentially threatened by today’s available resources and solutions in the care for our elders. It’s increasingly common now for many of us to have had either first-hand experience, or bore witness to the generational role-reversal when the child feels he must become the parent, thinking that the parent is becoming the child. Sugee Cake encapsulates a moment of this challenge within the family dynamics. The film subtly unravels the multifaceted ways love is packaged in, how differently it can be expressed and received all at once. And the potential of a new journey in life when there is a renewal of relationships between generations instead of a role-reversal.
